William G. “Bill” Cobai
June 14, 1935 – August 13, 2017
William G. ‘Bill’ Cobai, 82, went on to play the 19th hole on 13 August 2017. Bill was born to Emil and Helen Cobai in Crested Butte, CO on 14 June 1935. After graduating from Crested Butte High School he proudly served in the U.S. Air Force for one tour of duty. Afterwards, Bill embarked on a distinguished 35 year career with the National Security Agency in Fort Meade, MD where he garnered many awards and commendations.
During his years in Maryland, Bill was instrumental in establishing the Glen Burnine Elks Lodge #2266 and rose through the ranks eventually serving as the Exalted Ruler. He really enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow Elks and the club’s activities, both social and charitable. He was also an avid golfer and participated in many golf outings and tournaments. Golf was a love-hate relationship for him and many a tree still bear the scars of his temper and he often came home minus a golf club or two. Perhaps he will now realize his coveted hole in one! Basically, you could find Bill either on a golf course or at The Elks Lodge. He also enjoyed outdoor Christmas decorations and often placed in one of the top three spots in his neighborhood decorating contest. Clark Griswold had nothing on Bill Cobai at Christmastime!
Bill could hardly wait to return to his beloved Colorado to start the ‘golden years’ after retirement. He eventually settled in Delta where he added fishing to his golf and Elk activities. He swore this area was God’s country and he relished his time here. Bill made several dear friends in the Delta area that meant the world to him, especially in his later years.
While not always demonstrative regarding love for his family, Bill came to appreciate them late in life as was evidenced by the discovery of drawerful of family photos, announcements, and cards. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Johnny; niece, Melina; brothers-in-law Fred Halozon and Ernie Alvitre and several very special people in his life. He is survived by his loving daughter, Cindy (Geoffrey Dwight) Cobai; brother, Robert (Carol) Cobai; sisters, Coralie Alvitre, Darlene Halazon, and Liz (Rick) Hill. Additionally, he is survived by very special nieces and nephews: Jeannine (Mike) Allen, Greg Cobai, Fred (Miriam) Halazon, Ryan (Kristen) Halazon, Stacy (Ryan) Bateman, and James, Ashley, & J.T. Hill; along with several delightful great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family will gather later for a private celebration of Bill’s life. Donations in his name may be made to the Delta Elks Lodge # 1235.
Go Rest High on That Mountain, Bill Cobai!
