Gin was an only child born to Emery and Ruth (Bartlett) Andersen. She was born November 20, 1924 in Pueblo, Colorado. Raised in Fowler and LaJunta, CO, and Garden City Kansas, she attended Junior College in LaJunta and then went to the University of Colorado where she received her nursing degree.
She married Barry Greenwood M.D., September 22, 1945 and gave birth to Janet Ruth and Daniel Barry in November 1946. After living in Denver for five years, the family moved to Montrose in 1954 where Barry started his medical practice. She was a stay at home mom for several years (although she never really stayed at home…) and then worked at Montrose Memorial Hospital, as a public health nurse, and finally, a school nurse. After that she worked as a public health nurse and then a school nurse.
Gin was active in the community and in varied interests. She was active in her Church, the Hillcrest Congregational United Church of Christ, as an Eastern Star, Mother Advisor for Rainbow, the “I Can Read” program, received her 50 year pin as a member of PEO Chapter FJ a year ago. She delivered meals on wheels until just a few years ago.
She and Dr. Greenwood were always big supporters of Montrose High School athletics. She enjoyed playing bridge. She loved many different sports. Over the years she played golf (and created “Gin’s Garden” at the Black Canyon Golf Course.) She was an avid Bronco fan. She earned her water safety instructor certification and taught swimming lessons. She liked both snow and water skiing, and continued to ski until she was in her 80’s. She rode bikes and played basketball with her grandson, Barry, when he was growing up. Gin loved to be busy and loved people. Chatting was her normal mode.
Gin was pre-deceased by her grandson, Aaron Buckmelter, her husband, Dr. Barry Greenwood M.D., and her son Daniel B. Greenwood. She is survived by her daughter Jan (Greenwood) Daoust, her grandsons, Richard Emery Greenwood and (Richard) Barry Greenwood, and her two great-grandsons, Gabriel and Joshua Greenwood.
