Vera Holman

Vera Holman, a long-time resident of the Western Slope, died Thursday, Feb, 20, 2014 at The Homestead of Montrose. She was ninety seven years old.   A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00PM on Friday, February 21at the Front Entrance on Main Street of Crippin Funeral Home, in Montrose.  Funeral services will be on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at 2030 Stratford Drive in Montrose where she was a member. Burial will follow at the Valley Lawn Cemetery in Montrose.  A reception will follow at the church.  ?

Vera (Hutchison) Holman was born July 9, 1916, in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. She is the third child and second daughter of Abraham Hutchison and Myrtle Story. She spent her early years in Moroni, Utah with her family, older brother Leon, and sisters Louise and Beatrice. Vera’s family was in the sheep business in Moroni and spent their summers homesteading near Devil’s Slide, Utah. 

Vera married James Glen Holman in Manti, Utah, on March 12, 1936. Their marriage was sealed in the Jordan River Temple on June 23, 1984. Their early years were spent in Moroni, where Glen and his brothers worked with their father in the sheep business. They spent their summers on the ranch on Chalk Creek in the Uintah Range. Their first two children, Jim and Judy, were born in Utah. ?

In 1941, Vera and Glen then moved their sheep operation to Montrose, Powderhorn and Lake City. Vera and Glen, along with her sister, Beatrice, who married Glen’s brother, Emery, started their operation together and ran sheep together for many years. Vera and Glen had two more sons in Montrose, Ron and Ken.

Vera’s life was very full. Not only did she help with the sheep operation, but she also worked outside the home at Ben Franklins for several years and as a school cook. Vera’s family was very important to her and she was loved by all.  As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Vera served in various capacities.  Mother made sure that all of her kids attended primary and were baptized.

Vera was preceded in death by her husband Glen; one brother, Leon; one sister Louise, and her son, Jim. She is survived by her daughter, Judy (David) Lacefield of Grand Junction and her sons Ron (Kathy) of Montrose and Ken (Maureen) of Pocatello, Idaho, her daughter-in-law, Dorothy of Montrose, and her sister, Beatrice of Montrose. She is also survived by seven grandsons and two granddaughters as well as14 great-grand children and 5 great, great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
