Roberta “Marlene” Stewart

Long time resident of Montrose, Roberta Marlene Stewart, 76, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 27, 2014 at her home in Montrose, CO.
Marlene was born on June 7, 1938, in Spokane, Washington, to Robert Frederick and Claudia Wilma (Merlin) Hoffman. At age 7, after her parents divorce, Marlene moved to Fairfield, Montana and then later to Montrose, Colorado to live with her Aunt Nellie Dryden and cousins Bill and Beth Dryden.
Marlene graduated from Montrose High School in 1957. She married William (Bill) Stewart on June 17, 1956 at Montrose Christian Church. Bill and Marlene were united in marriage for 58 years.
Marlene was a woman with a lot of energy and loved to be on the go! An active member of the community, Marlene was a member of the Montrose Christian Church, Sweet Adelines, Magic Circle Players, Republican Women, Coal Creek Social Hour Club, Rebecca Oddfellows, and many more clubs and community events over the years. In addition to working numerous jobs, Marlene attended Camp Christian in Newcastle, CO every summer for 50 years, usually as a chaperon, cook, or camp nurse. Marlene even won $100 for first place in the corn-eating contest at the first Olathe Sweet Corn Festival!
Marlene loved to sing and sang at numerous funerals and at nursing homes. She loved to travel and visited all 50 states and many countries. Marlene was proud to have shaken hands with 6 U.S. Presidents.
Above all, Marlene was most passionate about her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and her family. She loved spending time with her family and friends. Marlene never met a stranger and loved helping and encouraging others. If you were fortunate enough to know Marlene, she loved you.
Marlene is survived by her husband Bill Stewart; four children, John Stewart of Rifle, CO, Judy (Steve) Pettengill of Montrose, CO, Jason (Mendy) Stewart of Olathe, CO, and Joy (Scott) McCracken of Montrose, CO; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Linda (Lloyd) Drinen of Farmington, Marlene was preceded in death by her parents; her three brothers, Norman Dale Larson, William Henry Dryden, and Robert Frederick Hoffman; her three grandchildren, Jeremiah Pettengill, Cristina Pettengill, and Jeremy Stewart; and two pet cats, Tiger Joe (fellow actor in I Remember Mama) and Wally the Therapist.
Services celebrating Marlene’s life will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at 2:00pm at Montrose Christian Church. The Service will conclude at the church. Donations in memory of Marlene can be made to The Gideons International, P.O. Box #222, Montrose, CO 81402 or to the charity of your choice.
