Peggy Anna Cox, 86, of Ouray died after a lengthy illness Oct. 9, 2016 at Valley Manor Care Center in Montrose, Colo., where she had been a resident for the past three years.

Peggy was born to Arthur V. Bielz and Anna L. (Beery) Bielz on Nov. 4, 1929 in Cripple Creek, Colorado, the sixth of 15 children.  She graduated Valedictorian of her class from Victor High School in May of 1947.

On June 7, 1947 Peggy married Lester J. Cox in a simple ceremony in Cripple Creek, Colo.  Lester preceded her in death in 2005.  Peggy, Lester and 6 mo. old Robert moved to Ouray, Colo. in 1949 and remained a part of that community for the rest of their lives.  They were the parents of four children:  Robert (Diane) Cox of Montrose, Colo.; Beverly (Dean) Langmaid of Boulder City, Nev.; Cynthia (Robert) Lacey of Ouray, Colo., and William A. Cox, who died in a skiing accident in 1970.

Peggy worked at many jobs in Ouray, including the Ouray Hospital and Duckett’s Market.  She spent 23 years as the chief deputy for the Ouray County Clerk’s Office, retiring in 1991.

Peggy was an active member of the Mt. Hayden Rebekah Lodge, serving as the lodge secretary for 43 years.  She was also a Past Noble Grand and received many accolades from that organization.  She was also a member of the Neighbor of Woodcraft, the Ouray Woman’s Club and served on the board of directors of the Ouray County Historical Society.  She was a member of the parish of St. Daniels Catholic Church in Ouray.

Along with son Robert and daughters Beverly and Cynthia, nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren survive Peggy. Sisters Martha Collom, Northglenn, Colo.; Ada Stephens, Victor, Colo.; Lois Beach, Victor, Colo.; Leona Stephens, Victor, Colo.; and brothers Wilfred Bielz, Dumont, Colo., Marvin Bielz, Victor, Colo., Merle Bielz, Concord, Calif. and James Bielz, Colorado Springs, Colo. also survive.

In addition to husband Lester and son William, Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Loretta Tremayne, and Katherine Bielz and brothers Albert Bielz, Bert Bielz, Erle Bielz and Arthur Bielz.

Services are scheduled for Oct. 15, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. and will be held at St. Daniels Catholic Church in Ouray.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in Peggy’s name may be made to St. Daniels Catholic Church or the Ouray County Historical Society.   Crippin Funeral Home in Montrose, Colo. is in charge of arrangements.
