Mary M Phillips

September 23, 1929 — April 1, 2017

Mary Phillips passed away peacefully on April 1, 2017 after a short stay in Colorow Care Center’s Memory Care Unit.

Mary was born on September 23, 1929 to James and Myrtle Reed, near Mount Wilson, close to Telluride. She was the youngest of three children and the only girl. When Mary was five years old her family moved to North Mesa, East of Olathe, Colorado. Her lifetime passion was breaking and riding horses. This hobby continued into her later life until she and her husband sold the ranch.

In 1947 Mary fell in love with Lee (Tom) Phillips, and they were married on July 17, 1948. To this union three children were born, two girls and one boy. Mary and her family had a ranch East of Montrose where they lived for 34 years. To help make ends meet Mary got her C.N.A. license and later worked at Russell Stovers as a gift wrap supervisor. In 1990 they moved to town after retiring and selling the ranch. Mary and Lee took up traveling. They visited most of the Central, Mountain and Pacific states. They also visited Canada. They loved camping and fishing. During the winter months, Mary made patch work quilts, and in the spring and summer she had her gardens, flowers and yard sales. She loved being outside in the yard or in the mountains fishing or just sitting and enjoying the peace and quiet.

Mary is survived by two daughters, Diane Ormsbee of Montrose and La Vaughn Harrington of Grand Junction. There are several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. Mary is preceded in death by her husband, son, her parents and brothers.
