Mary Joyce Scoggins (Moore)

JOYCE SCOGGINS

January 29, 1929 – March 3, 2014

Mary Joyce Scoggins entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior on March 3, 2014.  Joyce was a long-time resident of Ouray, CO, but spent her final years at Aspen Ridge Care Center in Grand Junction, CO.  Her strong will, unwavering faith in God, and the love and support of her family helped her through the long and painful journey of Alzheimer’s disease.  Joyce remained an inspiration to her family and caregivers; she could often be heard singing “Jesus Loves Me” while walking the halls of Aspen Ridge.

Joyce was born on January 29, 1929 in Laurel, MS to Leslie and Ruby (Lewis) Moore. She was one of four children and spent her childhood in Laurel, graduating from nearby Ellisville High School.  She married the love of her life, Ray Scoggins on June 7, 1947.  They were happily married for 55 years; Ray preceded her in death in 2002.  She is also preceded in death by both of her parents, her sister, Margaret (Moore) Bridges, and her brother, Roland Moore. She is survived by her younger sister, Judy (Moore) Holifield, her son Lynn Scoggins and his wife Lek, daughters Susan Doose and Karen Brewer and her husband Shannon, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Joyce and Ray had a wonderful life together, with faith and family at the center of everything they did. They lived in New Orleans, LA before moving to Ouray, CO in 1964.  They purchased the Box Canyon Motel and settled into life in the mountains, which they both loved.  They were founding members of the First Baptist Church of Ouray.  Joyce was always very involved in her church and in the community.  She served on the Ouray School Board, was an active member of the Woman’s Club, and served on the Chamber of Commerce.  At church, she was a Sunday school and Bible school teacher throughout the years.  She loved gardening and could often be found in her flower beds or working in the yard at the church. She had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel: her trips to Spain, Ireland, Hawaii, and Alaska all being highlights for her.

Our family is deeply grateful for the love, prayers and heart-felt support our mom has received during her illness. There are too many people to name individually, but included are the amazing caregivers and staff at Aspen Ridge Care Center in Grand Junction, Sunrise Creek Memory Unit in Montrose, and the staff from Hospice.  We wish to thank our friends for their continued support, and also strangers who were willing to take a moment of their time to offer comfort to Joyce in her times of distress.  Alzheimer’s patients suffer great loss and are all too often forgotten; however, they deserve our kindness and respect.  It has been a pleasure and an honor to spend time getting to know these wonderful senior citizens. We would encourage you to visit an Alzheimer’s Care Facility; you will be blessed!

Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Ouray, CO on Wednesday, March 5th at 1PM.
