Marvin Powers

May 10,1939 ~ September 26, 2018

Retired Daytona Beach Police, Captain Marvin Eugene Powers (79 y/o), went to be with His heavenly father 09/26/18.   Marvin was on the force for 26 years before retiring to run his own business, Florida Metro Investigations of Ormond Beach, FL where he worked 26 years alongside his loving wife, Elisabeth Powers. He traded trimming palm trees for working snow blowers; police caps to cowboy hats…After 51 years in Daytona Beach, Florida and retirement, at age 75, he moved to be near their grandchildren in Montrose, Colorado where he passed away at home peacefully after a long bout with cancer. He was active in his church, Rosemont Baptist and with local law enforcement retirees in Montrose.

Marvin was born in Gaithersburg, MD, May 10, 1939 to parents, Eugene and Catherine Powers of Gaithersburg. As a boy, Marvin loved racing cars and electronics. He worked with his father to build radios, repair televisions and other electronics. His dream was to eventually become a policeman and he realized that dream in 1963 with the help of his former father-in-law and retired Montgomery County police officer, Jim Lawrence, father to his first wife, Sandra Lawrence. He began as police officer who walked the beat, before being recognized as “Top Cop” in 1972, and promoted to Chief of Detectives, Captain and Deputy Sheriff. His notable accomplishments included the rescue of a young girl abducted in 1979. Marvin loved law enforcement. He taught at Daytona State College and was the first in his family to receive a college education with a BA in Criminal Justice from UCF. Marvin continued fighting crime with Florida Metro Investigations until he retired in 2013.

He and his wife Elisabeth loved the outdoors and spent the last five years hiking and driving the beautiful mountain parks of Utah and Colorado together. As a hobby he spent countless hours solving puzzles and researching history including studying the roots of the Powers family, the Civil War and more recently, Colorado Ute Indians. Marvin loved the Lord, life, children, and all animals, domestic and wild. Some may even remember him as “the birdman” in Daytona for his care and feeding of local birds.

Marvin was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and managed the website for Daytona Beach Police Retirees. He was a deacon at Central Baptist Church for many years and head of his Sunday School class.

Survived by his wife of 15 years, Elisabeth Powers of Montrose; sister Barbara Henson of Killeen, Texas; son, Larry Powers of Los Angeles, CA; daughter Lori Fancher and husband Jim of Cumming, GA; daughter Linda Wages and husband Bill of Orlando, FL; step children: Derek and Kirsten Ballew: Rod and Monica MacIntyre; Howard and Marsha Cooksey; and grandchildren: Samantha Parisi wife of Valerio Parisi; Charlie and Cassie Lefevre; Nicole, Heather, Austin, & Hogan MacIntyre; Kylie and Cole Evans, James and Thomas Fancher, Noelle Lefevre; Landon and Aspen Ballew; and, great grandchildren: Ariel and Aurelio Parisi; and his dog, Buddy.  Predeceased by his parents, brother John Powers who passed as an infant and beloved daughter, Cathy Powers Cowart of Longwood, FL, deceased, December 2011

‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,

And grace will lead me home.”
