Maria Elena Burton passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer.  She was surrounded by her family and went peacefully.  Elena was born in Montrose on December 14, 1961 but grew up and spent the first half of her life in Ouray.  Elena was known as the best damn waitress the Nugget ever had.  On June 6, 1981 she married her best friend and the love of her life Robert Burton.  Together they raised two sons, Michael Travis Garcia and Taylor King Burton.  After living a few years in Fort Huachuca, Arizona and also in Germany, she moved to Montrose where she spent 22 years as a cake decorator with City Market.  Elena had one grandson “Little Michael” who brought her more joy than she had ever expected.

Elena is survived by her husband Robert; sons, Michael and Taylor, and grandson Michael; Mother Mickie Montano, brother Philip Garcia; sister Stephanie Tolvo.  Elena was preceded in death by her father Leo Garcia.  She will be forever missed, fondly remembered and never forgotten.  At Elena’s request, cremation has taken place and no services will be held.
