Marcelino Anthony Mendisco

September 26, 1960 — July 30, 2018

Marcelino Anthony Mendisco, 57, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family July 30, 2018, in the comforts of his home in Montrose, Colorado.
Marcelino was born on Sept. 26, 1960, to Felix and Florence Marie (Matta) Mendisco in Montrose. He spent most of his childhood in Naturita, Colorado, and graduated from Nucla High School. He was a resident of Naturita for 57 years, belonged to the Nucla Catholic Church and was a hard rock miner for many years. Marcelino’s Basque culture was one of his proudest things in his life. He celebrated it with spirit and excitement. He went to several Basque festivals and visited his family in France as a younger child. He was a lover of the Colorado mountains and described them as “God’s Country.” He was one of the hardest workers that anyone knew and often times people had trouble keeping up with his work ethic. He lived his life with spirit always looking ahead to the next day, fighting for every moment. Marcelino raised his kids with the same values as he was raised; hard work is the only way to get ahead in life. Marcelino’s family was a core staple he treasured in his life. Some may have described him as “hard headed” but no one could have matched the size of his heart. As a new single dad with two daughters and one son he learned how to French braid his daughters’ hair because he never would have taken them in public without them looking nice. He taught his son and his nephew how to fish, hunt and play chess. As a born fighter, he fought brain cancer for the better part of 19 years and worked in the mines almost the entire time. He never gave up, even the night of his passing he was fighting. He will be remembered as a person that was described as bigger than life, hardworking, a caring son and father that raised his children and extended family the best he could, always protecting them and teaching them life’s lessons. He will be missed and loved beyond his years.
Marcelino is survived by his adoring partner of six years Vicki Mier; his three children: Marcelino Mendisco; Melissa Mendisco; Michelle Mendisco Urioste; his mother, Florence Mendisco; his brother, Marc Mendisco; sisters: Sharon Walisky; Consuelo Holliday; Olivia Hess; three grandsons: Baron, Breyan and Benson Ayers; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father Felix Mendisco.

A vigil and rosary will be held 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2018, at St. Mary Catholic Church. A funeral mass will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2018, at St. Mary Catholic Church with burial following at Grand View Cemetery. Father Nathanial Foshage of the St. Daniel’s Ouray Parish will be presiding over the services.
