Mamie Peterson
August 16, 1923 – December 25, 2015
After 92 years of love and laughter, Mamie Peterson passed away peacefully at her home on December 25, surrounded by those who loved her.
The daughter of James Janousek and Anna Catherine Schindler Janousek, Mamie was born on August 16, 1923 on the family farm about 12 miles southeast of Oberlin, Kansas. Mamie married Harold LeRoy “Pete” Peterson on December 24, 1950. Harold and Mamie shared the August 16 birthday. Born to this union was a daughter, Janice Kay. They lived in Oberlin until the spring of 1955 when they moved to Loveland, Colo. Harold was a brick mason and his profession took them to Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming as well as Aurora, Colo. They moved to a small farm in Delta in 1964 and then to Cedaredge in 1969. Montrose became their home in 1985 and both were active participants and volunteers at the Pavilion Senior Center for many years.
Mamie’s father played the button accordion at dances and her mother played the pump organ, so Mamie naturally had a love of music. She always said “That is why I was practically born dancing.” She and her husband attended the Senior dances at the Pavilion in Montrose as well as in Delta and sometimes even Grand Junction. They spent fifteen winters as Snowbirds , traveling to Quartzsite, Arizona and while there volunteered for the BLM, helping to keep campgrounds in good order.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents, her husband, Harold, in 1997, her sister Frances Douglass, a niece, Linda Douglass and a nephew, Philip Dunn. Mamie is survived by her daughter Janice and her husband, Steve Reynolds of Montrose, her sister, Helen Dunn, and niece Lenore Dunn, both of Oakford, IL, a nephew, Joe Douglass and his wife Sondra of Fruita, CO and 5 great nieces and nephews.
At Mamie’s request, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. Donations may be made in Mamie’s memory to the Golden Circle Seniors, c/o the Montrose Pavilion, P.O. Box 790, Montrose, CO 81402. Crippin Funeral Home and Crematory in Montrose is assisting the family.
