Mac D. Newsom, of Montrose, Colorado, died July 9, 2014 at Sunrise Creek Assisted Living Center. Mac was born February 13, 1919 to John and Faye (Landrum) Newsom in Scott City, Kansas. Following his high school graduation in 1937, Mac went on to college at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering. Mac served in the U.S. Army during World War II as part of the Corp of Engineers. It was during this time that he married his college sweetheart, Nettie A. Schump, of Herington, Kansas in October 1943. Together they raised four children, three of whom, still reside here in Colorado.
After leaving the military, Mac went on to begin his career with the Bureau of Reclamation, working as an engineer on several dams in Nebraska, New Mexico, and Colorado. His more recent project completions included Blue Mesa, Crystal, and Silver Jack Reservoirs, with the latter while under the title of Project Engineer.
During the time he was employed by the Bureau of Reclamation, Mac enjoyed several interests including photography, fishing, camping, and travel. In retirement, he continued to pursue these interests while maintaining his permanent residence in Montrose.
Surviving family members include his son, Dean, and spouse Pat Newsom of Sequim, Washington, daughter, Susan, and spouse Jonnie Godbey of Montrose, daughter, Janice, and spouse Harvey Martinez of Montrose, and son, Gary of Montrose. In addition, Mac leaves 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Mac was preceded in death by his parents, loving wife, Nettie, brother, Lew, and granddaughter, Beth Godbey.
Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at 1:00 P.M. at the Montrose Christian Church with Minister Brian Goforth officiating. The service will conclude at the Church. Interment will take place at Mountain View Cemetery in Longmont, Colorado. Final arrangements have been made under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory, Montrose, Colorado.
