Lillian M. Tafoya, age 84, passed away April 17, 2018 in Montrose, Co. Lillian was born September 14, 1933 to Vicente and Cecilia (Avila) Medina in Monte Vista, CO. She was the oldest of 13 children. She spent her childhood in Monte Vista. Lillian and Porfy met when they were 6 years old, and they began dating when they were teenagers. They were married in Del Norte, Colorado on April 26th, 1952. They moved to Silverton, Colorado in 1955, where their faith in the Catholic Church was strengthened by the local Church community, and Father Joseph Halloran. In 1958 they were instrumental in building the “Christ of the Mine” Shrine in Silverton. They moved to Montrose in 1960.
Lillian was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church and for many years she held many leadership positions and assisted families in several capacities in the church, including teaching Catechism, funeral service, and Easter activities. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed dancing, bowling, camping, playing bingo and cards. Her church and her service work were priorities to Lillian. She loved the Lord very deeply and was a devoted member of the Church.
She loved spending time with her family and her grandchildren were very, very special to her. Family members include her husband, Porfy; her children: Tino (Janie), Vincent, David (Kathy), Cynthia (Jerry) Jensen, and Richard (Carla), Mary Margaret; 17 Grandchildren: Jordan, Megan (Jeff), Kelli (James), Nicholas (Nicole), Billy (Alison), Pamela (Tim), Danielle (Magnus), Michelle, Mark (Kelly), Candice (Trevor), Dylan (Chantel), Marisa (Nate), Katie, Richard, Theresa, Chen, and Isaac, and 12 great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings include her brother Art (Tina), and sisters Lucy and Betty. Lillian was preceded in death by her son, Vincent and her daughter, Mary Margaret.
A Funeral Mass is scheduled for Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Mary Catholic Church followed by a reception at the Montrose Elks Lodge. Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory in Montrose is assisting the family.
