Kurt F. Stoy, retired business owner, died on August 29, 2016 at age 88.
Kurt was born in St. Louis, Missouri on October 8, 1927 to German immigrants, Walter and Frieda (Nuemann) Stoy. Kurt’s father was a steam engineer on the Hamburg Line and his mother was a seamstress.
Kurt attended Concord and Melville High Schools in Sappington, Missouri until the 10th grade when he began inspecting electrical components for St. Louis County Water Company. He later worked at Ameritorp Corporation for two years during the war inspecting torpedo components. He was a rural mail carrier for a time and then was employed as a supervisor at LaDue Supply, a company that fabricated buildings.
He met Bernice June Mueller and they were married on September 2, 1950 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Olivette, Missouri.
In 1954, Kurt started St. Charles Water Well Drilling Company and later temporarily partnered in American Mining Corporation, a company which did blasting for the new interstate highway systems being built. The water well drilling company was a successful business when, in 1975, he sold it to move the family to Montrose, Colorado. He started Alpine Artcraft Company in his semi-retirement.
Kurt and Bernice enjoyed traveling the country in their RV and the winters they spent in Arizona. Kurt especially loved to be outdoors. He never got tired of driving country roads to admire the scenery of Colorado. Another of his passions was watching Rocky Mountain PBS or any program about travel, wildlife or beautiful places.
Kurt is preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; brothers, Ehrenfried Stoy and Robert Stoy. He is survived by his three children, Donna (Doug) Stepanovic, Ken (Faith) Stoy and Karen (Eric) Backer; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Kurt and Bernice’s ashes will be interred together at Valley Lawn Cemetery in Montrose at a family graveside memorial per Kurt’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rocky Mountain PBS. Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose is assisting the family.
