Juel F. Powell 10/8/1922 – 4/6/2014
Juel Farren Powell, 91, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2014 at Valley Manor Nursing Home. There will be a graveside service at Grand View Cemetery at 3pm on Saturday, April 12. Juel’s survivors include daughters Kathy (Chip) Marlow, Juele (Lou) Glisan, and son Tracy Powell, 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy; sisters Erma, LaMar, Vonda; one brother, Owen. Also preceding him in death were two sons Russell and Cody.
Juel was born Oct. 8, 1922 in Bluebell, Utah, the youngest son of George Richard Powell and Mary Jane Wall. After spending his youth in Bluebell, and Orem, Utah where he graduated from Lincoln High School, he traveled to California to work for Vega Ventura Aircraft Company.
In 1942, Juel returned to Provo, Utah where he married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Jones. One month later, he was drafted into the Army Air Force, serving much of three years with the 20th Army Air Force on the island of Saipan in the Pacific.
Juel began his civilian career as an electrician in Provo, Utah, later moving to California expanding into the field of designing and testing missiles for the Atomic Energy Commission.
In 1959, the family returned to Utah where Juel worked for several companies in the aeronautical industry. Beginning in 1965, Juel was employed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation where he worked the next 21 years at 21 different power plants and sub stations in California, Idaho, Wyoming, and Colorado.
Juel was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Juel enjoyed raising a huge garden and sharing the bounty with family and friends. He genuinely loved and cared for all his animals while raising sheep, cows, horses, and chickens. He especially loved helping the kids feed the bum lambs. He loved the outdoors and spending time with the kids while camping, hunting, fishing, and gathering firewood. He could fix anything – from a busted car engine to a child’s broken heart.
Juel was smart, but humble; strong, but gentle; stubborn, but funny; strict, but playful. We all will especially miss his corny sense of humor, his leading by example, his honesty and work ethic, his selflessness, and his unconditional love.
We will miss you Dad – a father who earned so much respect simply by living a good life. Arrangements are under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory, Montrose, Colorado
