John Svaldi, age 86, passed away June 17, 2016 at San Juan Living Center in Montrose, Colorado.

John was born June 13, 1930 to John and Josephine (Bartoletti) Svaldi in Ouray, Colorado. John graduated from Ouray High School before starting his life long career in mining. John started working at the age of 17, at the Idarado Mine in Ouray. He also worked at the Bachelor, The Revenue, and Camp Bird mines. John was a well-known and sought after “mill man”. He managed mills in Grand Junction, Gunnison, Silverton, Ouray, Idaho Springs, Crested Butte, Breckenridge, Lake City, and Dillon, Montana. In addition, his skills as a hoisting engineer were second to none.

John was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church. He was known for being a very generous and caring man. He was a devout son, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend; who will be greatly missed.

John is survived by his wife of 30 years, Doris Svaldi; his son Steve Svaldi of Tacna, AZ; his daughter Kathryn of Fruita, CO; his grandson Michael (Maggie) Svaldi of Belgrade, MT; his granddaughter Summer Brook Svaldi of Grand Junction, CO, Betty Svaldi of Grand Junction, CO; and great grandchildren Christopher, Garrett, and Kristopher. John is preceded in death by his parents, John and Josephine, his son Christopher, and daughters Cindy and Christy.

There will be a Funeral Mass Friday, June 24, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Daniel’s Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to John’s grandson Michael Svaldi who is battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at www.YouCaring.com/svaldi . Arrangements are under the care of Crippin Funeral Home and Crematory.
