Born March 10, 1930 at Durango, Durango Mexico.  Son of Jose Mier and Vicenta Gonzales.  Came to the USA when he was 19 years of age. Worked in New Mexico and San Luis Valley until 1953.  October 1953 he made his home in Montrose, Co

He was married to Helen Martinez the love of his life and in return the love of her life on October 12, 1953 at Taos New Mexico.  They were married for 63 years almost 64 wonderful years.  In 1955 he became an American Resident and March 7, 1962 became an American Citizen.

He has 2 sons: Philip Ray Mier and Calvin Michael Mier and wife Diana.

Grandchildren:  Alexandria, Sean, Ariana, Crystal , Monique, Anthony, Christina, Julia and Max and many more that called him grandpa.

Great grandchildren: Andre , Zavier, Isaac, Kellan, Camden, Aniyus

3 Brothers: Enrique (deceased), Auerillo (deceased), Antonio Mier

4 Sisters: Aurora Mier Varges, Mary Daguerre, Belen Rael (deceased), Teresa Dominguez

After retirement Joe spent many hours doing carpenter work and other chores for any one that needed his help.  He was very helpful in caring for his father and mother in-law Ramon and Sofia Martinez and helping with everything and anything.  Also with his sons he did anything to help them out.  Took care of yard and home while Helen was at shop.  Also helped with the shop work that needed to be done, that he was part owner.

Joe has always been a fixer upper anywhere he went to visit.  He always found something to fix or do.  Very hard working person.

He worked very hard up until the last 2 days of his life.

Worked as laborer and ranch hand in 1955.  Went to work for Uncompahgre Valley Water Users.  Operated big machinery, mainly backhoe operator.  He retired January 1996 from UVWUA.  He served for many years at St. Mary’s as Eucharistic Minister and Minister of Hospitality.  Member of Guadalupanas Society and has always been very faithful in helping (Helen) with choir functions.

Has several nephews and nieces, great nephews and nieces and great great nephews and nieces.

He was a lifetime Elks member.  In Joe Miers last moments he was surrounded by his family.  He will always be remembered as a sweet gentle soul with a soft spoken voice.  Funeral to be Sunday March 5, 2017     10:00 AM at the Montrose Elk’ Lodge.  Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory in Montrose is assisting the family
