JoAnn (Boren) Spangler, age 77, of Nucla passed away at her home on Sunday July 9th, 2017. She was born on April 5, 1940 in Cortez, Colorado. Her parents, Earl and Bessie Boren raised JoAnn, her brother, Jimmy and sister, Alta in various parts of Colorado and other Western States. JoAnn attended Nucla High School and during this time met the love of her life and future husband, William (Billy) Spangler. They were married soon after on her 17th birthday, April 5th, 1957 at Trinity Baptist Church in Naturita, Colorado. JoAnn was a loving and kind person who was very fond of her family and treasured her relationships with her brother and sister and their many aunts, uncles, and cousins. JoAnn was known for remembering and telling many stories about the fun times they had growing up together and spoke openly about the family heart breaks. JoAnn had many Brothers and Sisters In-law whom she had a special relationship with each and loved raising her family around. JoAnn was most proud of her husband Billy and their kids Kim, Brent, and Jeff Spangler. She thought the world of her kids and wanted the best for them as they grew up. She loved having all 3 kids eventually move home to the Nucla area where she could be close to them! She wasn’t an overly political person – she voted for whoever was “for coal” and voted against those who were not. She supported her local community and liked to buy “American” when she could. She was a huge Colorado Rockies fan who knew all of the player stats and watched the games religiously! She also enjoyed playing Pinochle with the ladies in Nucla. JoAnn had a passion for collecting antiques and other goodies at yard sales and auctions. Her treasure collection is impressive! She loved reading books and watching old movies like Gone with the Wind. She was a history buff who knew a bit about everything and enjoyed watching Jeopardy to test her skills. JoAnn loved gambling – scratchers, Lotto, Powerball – it didn’t matter, but there was nothing like seeing her win in a Casino! She would get so excited and would not want to leave that machine – and sometimes she didn’t until she was literally pulled away! JoAnn was the best Gramie and Grandma to her 7 grandkids and 9 great-grandkids. She loved spending holidays together and was sure to attend as many sporting events as she could. She loved visits from all of her grandkids and had them often. She always kept the jelly bean bowl full of candy so the kids would have a treat when sitting at her table talking about whatever. She had pictures of them displayed all around her house. JoAnn is preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Bessie and her dear sister, Alta Mae. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Billy Spangler, her brother Jimmy (Robbie) Boren, her children Kim (Wayne), Brent, and Jeff and her many grandkids and great-grandkids. Funeral services will be held at the Nucla Community Center in Nucla, Colorado on Friday July 14, 2017 at 10:00 A.M followed by internment at the Cedar Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Nucla-Naturita EMS team. Please mail donations to P.O. Box 911, Nucla CO 81424. Thank you to her team of doctors and EMT’s here in Nucla-Naturita and at St. Mary’s in Grand Junction.
