Jeannie Rice (Scarbrough)

February 9, 1935 — February 6, 2023

Jeannie Rice of Cimarron, Colorado passed away three days before her 88th birthday on Monday, February 6, 2023 at Valley Manor Care Center in Montrose, Colorado. She had been a resident of the Memory Care Unit since December 2021. Jeannie was born February 9, 1935 in Fort Worth, Texas to Harry and Elaine Scarbrough. On February 8, 1952 she married William S. Rice, Jr. in Hereford, Texas. Jeannie adored babies. She and William had a total of 9 children, though two of them were lost to stillbirth. Jeannie was a very social person and enjoyed visiting with friends and family. While living in Missouri, she had the neighbor ladies get together for coffee on Thursday mornings and bowling at night. She drove the Cimarron school bus to Montrose schools and then a bus to Delta to deliver kids to the Vo-Tech school. She enjoyed visiting with the other bus drivers and made lifelong friends in the process. She also worked at Russell Stovers Candy and Valley Manor Care Center in housekeeping. She enjoyed all the residents she got to know as well as all the staff. Jeannie also loved to travel. After William’s retirement they fulfilled a lifelong dream and took a 3-week adventure through Alaska, bringing home many pictures and memories to share with the family. Another trip to Cozumel, Mexico gave them an adventure of a lifetime. While William was working for Coleman Trucking out of Gunnison, Colorado, Jeannie got to travel with him to deliver bulls all over the United States, and very much enjoyed every trip. Jeannie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William, her sister Bettye, her daughter Risa, and sons Cody and Kyle. She is leaving behind her six remaining children: Holt (Rhonda) Rice of Missouri, Rheata (Mark) Steen of Cimarron, Roxie (Roy) Huston of Olathe, Rorri Adams of Trindad, Shane Rice of Montrose and Robyn (David) Huston of Montrose, as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great grandchildren. She also leaves behind brother-in-law Don (Pat) Rice of Texas, and many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her and those she impacted throughout her life. She received excellent care while residing in the Memory Care Unit at Valley Manor Care Center, and for that her family will be forever grateful. A service will be planned for a later date.
