Jean Helen Cornett passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2017.
Jean was born January 12, 1928 to William Bryan and Hazel Jane (White) Palmer in Alamosa, Colorado. Jean spent her childhood in the Alamosa, Creede, and Telluride area. She graduated in 1946 from Telluride High School.
In October 1946 Jean married William “Bill” Cornett in Ouray, Colorado. Jean and Bill were married 46 years before Bill’s passing in 1992. They spent most of their married life in Ophir, Sawpit, Fall Creek and Placerville, all in San Miguel County.
In 1946, on an emergency teaching certificate, Jean taught for one year at Washburn Grade School on Hasting’s Mesa. From 1953 to1984 Jean served as Postmaster at the Placerville Post Office.
Jean was part of the Telluride School Board of Education, Civil Service Retirement System, DAR-Daughters of the American Revolution, AARP, and the Elk’s Club. She was also a member of the Montrose Christian Church. Jean enjoyed all kinds of music, dancing, gardening, drawing and traveling. Traveling to Ireland, Branson (Missouri) and back to her childhood home area of the San Louis Valley were her favorites. Her companion, Oscar her dog, was by her side for 18 years.
Jean is survived by her two children, son Dewayne “Pete” of Colorado and daughter Cassandra of Alaska. She is also survived by one brother, five precious grandchildren, two wonderful great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of Jean’s life will be held August 26, 2017 at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. with her minister, Spencer Powers, officiating.

Jean will be remembered for her great laugh and fun spirit. She will be missed by all.
