“A Life Well Lived”

Jamie Crossfield Carpenter

May 20, 1912 ~ December 2, 2016

Jamie Crossfield Carpenter, age 104, of Montrose, Colorado went to her heavenly home on December 2nd, 2016 after “A Life Well Lived”.  Jamie was born May 20, 1912 to Charles E. and Lucy (Young) Crossfield in Pratt, Kansas. She spent her early childhood there. At age seven she moved with her family to homestead in Baca County, Colorado near what became the small town of Pritchett, Colorado. She was educated in country schools and by her mother. Jamie graduated from high school in Springfield, Colorado in 1929.  Afterwards, she attended Colorado State Teacher’s College in Greeley, Colorado where she earned her teaching certificate. She returned to Baca County to teach school in rural one-room schoolhouses that housed the first through the eighth grades. Many of the students as well as Jamie, rode their horses to school.

Jamie married James Medray Carpenter on May 27, 1932 in Clayton, New Mexico. Medray and Jamie had been classmates at Springfield High School.    Jamie and Medray later resided in Grand Junction, Colorado; Abilene, Kansas; and in their long National Park Service life together; Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Washington D.C.; and Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming before moving to Montrose where Medray was Superintendent of Colorado National Monument, Black Canyon National Monument (now a National Park), and Curricanti National Recreation area. Medray preceded Jamie in death on January 28, 1985 in Montrose.

Jamie was a member and active in the First Presbyterian Church in Montrose, N.P.S. Women’s Club; Girl Scout Leader, and a Job’s Daughter Leader when she and Medray lived in Santa Fe.   She was a strong political conservative, a voracious reader, and student of both U.S. and World History. She enjoyed politics, history and watching Fox News. Jamie loved traveling and had experienced two trips to Mexico with her husband, Medray, and had the joy of two trips to Europe with her daughter and two grandchildren.

Friendship meant so much to Jamie. All who had the privilege of knowing her and being her friend are truly blessed. She was a blessing to all, but most importantly to her family.  Cooking and getting together with family was always a joy to Jamie.  She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whether at home in Montrose or at the family cabin on the Piedra River.  Jamie was loved by all who knew her.  She was a wonderful, devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  All of our lives are enriched by her gifts and amazing life.  She will always be in our hearts and close to us.

Surviving family members include her three children James E. ( Jane) Carpenter of Englewood, Colorado, Kenneth M. (Paula) Carpenter of Castle Rock, Colorado, Charlene C. Vieira (Steven D.)  Bone of Page, Arizona; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson son: Jane E. Carpenter, Kristin R. Carpenter, Erika S. (Randy Hancock) Carpenter and their children Zachary and Tyler, Jennifer C. (Dan) Kowalski and their daughter Estelle, Julia C. Halstead and her children, Jessica (Michael) Salazar and their son Ryder, Lance and Amanda Halstead, Tyler Wilson, and Victor James (Shannon) Vieira.
