Harriet Sylvia Dietrich (Wobbema)

June 6, 1932 — February 6, 2017

Harriet Sylvia (Wobbema) Dietrich, 84, of Montrose, Colorado, formerly Torrance, California, went to see Jesus on February 6th, 2017 at San Juan Living Center. Harriet was born to Herman and Ellen (Wiersma) Wobbema on June 6th, 1932 in Orange City, Iowa. Growing up in Iowa she attended school, helped at her parent’s store, and liked to buy ice cream sodas with her friends.

She attended St. Paul Bible College and earned a degree in music. While there she traveled with a coral group and performed in plays such as Little Women.

After graduating, she taught at Brown’s School for Girls in Glendora, California. She taught in elementary schools throughout her life and served as a school principle. She also gave piano lessons, was an accomplished pianist and vocalist, and wrote music.

She met Lawrence “Larry” A. Dietrich during a church program where they were asked to work on a project together. They got married on June 25th, 1956 in Pasadena, California.

Harriet and Larry lived their lives for Jesus. They were dedicated members of the Christian and Missionary Alliance and volunteered at church in various positions throughout their marriage. During her lifetime, Harriet was a choir director, church secretary, leader of Pioneer Girls, volunteer in Child Evangelism Fellowship and Sunday School teacher.

At home, Harriet loved to cook, entertain, and read novels. Her children, Sue and Larry, have many happy memories of all the projects they did together. She was a great mom and grandma who led by example of what it is to live a life for Jesus.

Harriet was an artist and took drawing and painting classes. She was talented at sewing, knitting, crocheting, and tatting. She LOVED to do puzzles and was always looking for a new Springbok. She dedicated hours to learning how to use her computer, iPad, and television (with patient phone assistance from her daughter and granddaughters).

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her brother John Wobbema, her sister Clarice (Wobbema) Eschenbrenner, and her brother-in-law, James O. Eschenbrenner.

She is survived by her daughter Susan “Sue” Martensen (Paul) of Montrose and her son Lawrence Jr. “Larry” (Kathy) of La Mirada, California, and her grandchildren Elizabeth, Julie, Matthew, and Jacob. Also survived by sister-in-law Margaret (Dietrich) Mitchem (Don), and nephews Jim and Mark Eschenbrenner.

There will be a memorial service celebrating Harriet’s life at 10:00AM on Friday, February 17th, 2017 at Calvary Chapel Montrose (2201 S Townsend Ave.) with lunch to follow. A memorial service in Southern California will be in March. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Christian and Missionary Alliance – Great Commission Fund or Christ’s Kitchen Montrose in Harriet’s name.
