Tues at 0902 Command Sergeant Major Guy Brooner US Army retired, passed in his sleep at Paonia Nursing and rehab center after a lifelong battle with agent orange.
Guy was born on Oct. 6, 1931 to Gerhard H. and Neola L. Brooner in Cimarron Kansas. At the age of 6 he and his family moved to Montrose, Colorado and graduating from Montrose High School in 1951. While in high school he enlisted in the Colorado National Guard. After graduation he joined the U.S. Army and served his country in Korea, Vietnam (twice), Japan, Holland, Germany, and throughout the Cold War. While in the service he met his soul mate for life. Akiko Hironaga, and were married in Fukuoka Japan on March 22, 1955. They had only one son, Guy Wesley. In 1975 with the rank of Command Sergeant Major, and Serving in Germany, Guy retired from the Army, with over 27 yrs of service, and moved with Akiko and Wesley to Montrose Colorado.
Awards and decorations from his military service include:
Combat Infantry Badge, Parachute Badge (Jump wings), Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service medal with Oak leaf cluster, Army commendation Medal with two Oak leaf clusters, and numerous other medals and awards.
He was a Methodist, a life member of the Military order of the Purple heart, the DAV, and the VFW. He enjoyed working on his farm, traveling in the mountains and surrounding areas of Montrose. He also enjoyed traveling to antique stores with his daughter-in-law Erika, and haggling over the price when he proved that just maybe that merchandise isn’t as “antique” as they wanted it to be. He loved his horses, and would spend many hours just sitting outside the barn with Erika just talking, with an occasional ride thrown in.
But his biggest joys were his grandchildren, Scott Gerhard, Sarah Dani, Sydney Bohn, and Shelby Bohn, whether picking them up from school, sneaky trips to Dairy Queen, Grandpa would always have time for them.
Survivors include his son Guy Wesley, his wife Erika, four wonderful grandchildren Scott G, Sarah D., Sydney and Shelby Bohn, and two very special friends Beth and Larry Clark. Guy was preceded in death by his wife, Akiko, sister Barbara Gray, and his parents.
A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. at Grand View Cemetery with Pastor Paul Nystrom officiating. Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory in Montrose is assisting the family.
