Gerald “Gary” McDermott

June 14, 1946 – November 15, 2018

Gerald “Gary” McDermott of Montrose passed away Thursday, November 15, 2018 at the age of 72.  Gary was born June 14, 1946 to Wesley and Louise (Gilmer) McDermott in Gunnison, Colorado, where he also spent his childhood and graduated from Gunnison High School.  Gary married the love of his life, Patricia (Childers) McDermott in 1976 in Reno, Nevada.

Gary spent most of his working career as a Hydro Electric Engineer.  He was proud to have been part of the team that maintained Blue Mesa, Morrow Point, and Crystal dams.  His work nickname was “McGadget” because he loved having tools that helped him work smarter, not harder, even though he worked really hard all his life.  During his time off he enjoyed camping, hunting, giving to others by being an EMT, a volunteer Fireman, and donating blood when ever he could. Many people in this valley are alive because he cared so much for this community.  He also enjoyed woodworking.

Gary is survived by his daughter Lisa Martin of Montrose, his sister Cynda McKenna, two grandchildren, Lauren (Jean) Berenjy and Kayla Martin, as well as two precious great-grandchildren, Ashkan and Athena Berenjy. Gary is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Pat, and his sister Trudy.

A family gathering to honor Gary will take place in Gunnison in the Summer of 2019.
