George Albert Works, Jr., age 98 and a resident of Montrose since 1990, died in his home on Sunday, December 4, 2016.  George was born May 13, 1918 at Vernon, Texas and the first child of George Albert Works Sr. and Florence Elizabeth Enos Works.  He grew up in Denver, Colorado, attended East Denver High School and graduated from the University of Colorado in Chemical Engineering.

In 1943 he was commissioned in the United States Navy and served in the Pacific Theater as an Ordnance officer.  He later retired with the rank of LTCDR.  His professional life was spent in the design and construction of petroleum facilities in the United States and abroad.

He, with his wife, Virginia, were founding members of the Montrose affiliate of Habitat for Humanity.  Both served as directors for a number of Years and he was president for two years.  In recognition of their service, Works Way in the Habitat Mesa Vista Subdivision was named for them.

He served on the construction advisory board for the new Montrose Regional Library.  Following the death of his wife in 1996 he became active in Hospice of the Uncompahgre Valley serving on the advisory board, fundraising committee and speakers bureau.

Mr. Works was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and sister and his wife, Virginia.  He is survived by his daughter, Peggy Wilson, of Franklin, Tennessee, a granddaughter, Stephanie Georgia Clark and twin grandsons Michael Branyon Wilson and Christopher Gibbs Wilson, and three great-great granddaughters Savannah Kyleigh Clark, Evelyn Monroe Clark and Skyler Irene Wilson.

A Memorial Service in celebration of George’s life will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. and Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.  A Graveside Service with Military Honors will follow at Grand View Cemetery, west of Montrose.  Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory in Montrose is assisting the family.
