GENE A. SMITH

Gene A. Smith passed away Sunday, May 11, 2015, in Delta, CO.  Gene was born to Albert and Eunice (Wolff) Smith, May 8, 1938, in Crawford, NE.  He attended the Corn Valley/Four Mile School, and graduated from Crawford High School. He married Nadine Doolittle, in Crawford, NE. To this union, a daughter, Denise, was born.  Gene drove trucks and operated heavy equipment for Morrison Knudson, Peter Kiewit, plus several smaller companies. Gene married Deanna Helmuth, in Las Vegas, NV. He worked for Martin Marietta in Littleton, CO.  The saying ‘You can take the boy out of the country, but not the country out of the boy’ applied to Gene. He liked living in the country and working on the family farm which he managed until the death of his mother. Preceding him in death were his parents and sister, Cheryll  Barcal Voorhees. He is survived by Nadine Baker, Torrington, WY; daughter, Denise (Jeff) Keith and sons, Lakewood, CO; Deanna Smith, Las Vegas, NV; step-children, Tom Helmuth, Tammy (Randy) Ratzlaff and son, Mike (Renee) Helmuth and children; sister, Janice Hoffman of Chadron, NE; nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held in Crawford, NE at a later date.
