Enid Butler (Peacock)

December 11, 1930 — October 4, 2016

Enid Butler, 85, a long-time Montrose resident passed away on Tuesday evening, October 4, 2016, following a long illness.

Enid was born in Grand Junction, Colorado, on December 11, 1930, to Henry Melvin Peacock and Clea Eliza Pehrson Peacock. She was the second of two daughters. She spent her early childhood in Glade Park, Colorado. The family later moved to Hunter where her father was a dairy farmer. Enid graduated from Fruita High School and earned an associate’s degree from Mesa College that qualified her to teach school. She also worked as a nursing assistant.

It was while attending Mesa College that she met the love of her life and her eternal companion, Stephen Lee Butler. They were married on October 21, 1950, in Mesa County. Their early years of marriage were spent in Grand Junction, Colorado, and in 1964 they moved to Montrose where they resided until their deaths. While Stephen built a career in retail lumber and hardware, Enid was a devoted wife, a loving mother to six, and a homemaker.

Enid spent her life in service to others. As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in various capacities including visiting teacher, Relief Society President, Primary President, and Sunday School teacher. She was especially sensitive to the needs of the widows in her congregation. After she herself was widowed in 1996, she spent a week of each month for several years in Denver, serving in the temple there. She also enjoyed serving in the community as an election judge. She was a thoughtful and kind neighbor.

Without a doubt, her greatest service was to her family. She is lovingly remembered by her children: Stephanie (Kenneth) Galbraith, Scott (Lisa) Butler, Suzanne (Tom) Williams, Shawna (Rodney) Lerdall, Sheridan (Jay) Mitchell, and Sydnee (Kevin) Calderwood. She is also survived by 28 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, one niece, and two nephews.

Enid was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her parents, her sister Audra, her granddaughter Camille Mitchell, and one nephew.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday October 8, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1521 Hillcrest Drive in Montrose. There will be a viewing prior to the services from 9:00-10:30 a.m. at the same location. Crippin Funeral Home of Montrose is assisting the family.
