Emma Darlene “Dee” Tesch, 94 of Montrose, Colorado, passed away on May 8, 2018 at Heidi’s Chateau.
Emma was born December 23, 1923 in her parents’ home in DeWitt, Nebraska to Webb Huber and Emma (nee Lampe) Smith. She was baptized in the Lutheran Church in DeWitt in January 1924. When Emma was young her family moved to Des Moines, IA where her dad first built a house and then later a gas station, cabins, and finally the “Beacon Motel.” As a child, Emma enjoyed playing the piano, participating in Girl Scouts, sewing, and going to church and school.
She attended a year of nursing school before meeting her future husband Harold Emil Tesch, whom she married on September 8, 1945 at St. Paul Lutheran in Des Moines. Living in McCook, NE; Otis, CO; Athol, KS; Wharton, TX; Mission Valley, TX; and Yorktown, TX, Emma epitomized what a Lutheran pastor’s wife should be. She took an active role in each of these congregations, playing the organ, singing, and directing both youth and adult choirs. While in Wharton she finished her nurses’ training and became a licensed vocational nurse. She worked for doctors in Wharton, Victoria, and Yorktown. Her favorite part of nursing was delivering babies.
After retiring, she moved from Yorktown to live near her daughter Beth and to watch her granddaughters grow up. Quilting was Emma’s favorite hobby during her time in Montrose, and she was a member of the San Juan Quilt GuiId, a woman’s prayer group, and a group she called the ‘Widow’s Group’. Emma always loved to play games and she and Harold played dominoes nearly every day. While in Montrose, she loved to play ” hand and foot” with several of her friends who regularly came to play cards.
Emma was preceded in death by her husband Harold; her parents; and her brothers Bob, Bill, and Don. Surviving her are her four children and their spouse s: John and Debbie Tesch from Trophy Club, TX; Beth and Jon Gordon from Montrose; Mark Tesch and Michelle Jerome from Chelan, WA; and Paul and Kelley Tesch of Lubbock, TX. Also surviving her are seven granddaughters: Michele Creech, Clair Preus, Jennifer Rehm, Heidi Cephus, Jessica Gordon, Emily Gordon, and Amy Braunecker, as well as five grandsons: Matthew Tesch, Peter Sydloski -Tesch, Samuel Sysdloski-Tesch, Toby Pharr, and Luke Tesch. Also surviving her are eleven great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and many close friends.
