Elsie Rahe (Inman) Roy

July 27, 1919 ~ August 19, 2014

On August 19, 2014, Elsie Rahe (Inman) Roy went ‘fishin’ with her Lord and Savior. She left this world from the Colorow Care Center in Olathe, Colorado where she was cared for by a loving staff.

Elsie was born on July 27, 1919 in Naylor, Missouri to John Henry Inman and Viola Mae (Mummert) Inman.  She was the fourth of ten children; Zeno Charles Inman, Elze Dan Inman, William Edward Inman, Earl Elmer Inman, John Manual Inman, Bobby Gene Inman, Elvie Mae (Inman) Pauli, Etta June (Inman) Williams, and Louis Fritz Inman. All have pre-deceased Elsie except Etta June Williams.

The Inman family packed all of their worldly goods and moved to Montrose, Colorado in 1928, via Oklahoma, to join her uncle, Robert Inman.  The trip over old Monarch Pass frightened her mother so much that she had the children walk over the mountain to Sargents, Colorado at the foot of the pass.  Nine year old Elsie carried her two year old brother, John Manual, through-out the trek to Sargents.

She lived in the Montrose area for the majority of her 95 years. She graduated from Coal Creek Elementary and attended Montrose High School through tenth grade. She had to quit high school to care for her younger brother John when he was hospitalized and almost died. On June 27, 1937 she married William Minard Roy, who was born and raised in the Montrose area.  They had four children; Georgia Viola (Roy) McNeill, Alice Rahe (Roy) Amato, William Henry Roy, and Thomas Warren Roy (m) Barbara J (Yates) Roy. They were blessed to raise all four of their children to adulthood. Georgia, Thomas (Tom) and his wife Barbara continue to live in the Montrose valley. Alice resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Elsie was preceded in death by her Husband William M. (Bill) Roy in 1971 and her son William H. (Billy) Roy in 1992.

Elsie has twelve grandchildren, twenty great- grandchildren, and thirty one great, great- grandchildren. If any of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren or great, great grandchildren had any hopes for a cookie baking, housewife, granny, they would have been sorely disappointed.  Elsie was a hunting, fishing, camping, race-car driving, truck-driving gal.  When other women of her generation wore dresses and sensible shoes she wore cowboy boots and jeans. She loved the outdoors and shared that love with anyone who wanted to tag along.  It was not unusual to see her taking a surplus of family members, from the itty bitties on up to adults, on an adventure in the mountains. Many people learned to hunt, camp and fish at her knee.

Elsie had an easy laugh and a ready smile.  Granny Elsie also had an indomitable spirit that got her through the hard times in life that she passed on to many of her “kids.”  She would tell them “When life gets hard just grab another gear and give it the gas.” She knew it was important to just keep moving forward.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to The Colorow Care Center’s activity Department or any charity of your choice.  Arrangements are under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory, Montrose, Colorado.
