Ellis R. Cook, Jr.

Long-time Moab resident Ellis R. Cook, Jr. passed away March 24 in the Homestead at Montrose, Colorado. His 100th birthday was celebrated March 7 with a lovely reception in the Homestead.
He was born in Duluth, Minnesota in 1918 to E. R. and Marjorie Sutton Cook, the eldest of five sons. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and married Allien Miller, a Moab native, in 1942 while stationed in San Diego, California. They lived in San Diego and later Minneapolis before settling in Moab in 1951 and building a home on Rosetree Lane where they brought up five children.
Mr. Cook was an accountant with an office in the Uranium Building on Moab’s Main Street for many years. He worked with Micro Copper and later E.J. Claus and Plateau Resources in Shootering Canyon. He was a proud Navy veteran and a member of the American Legion for nearly 60 years. He was a member of the Moab Elks Lodge, serving as Exalted Ruler and later as president of the state association.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2008, son-in-law Walter Lempert in 2015 and his four brothers. He is survived by five children: Marjorie Carter (Preston) of Palo Alto, California, Ray Cook (Shirley) of Montrose, John Cook of Studio City, California, Jill Cook of Columbus, Ohio, Fred Cook of San Manuel, Arizona and grandson Brian Cook of Littleton. He is also survived by his dear friend of his last years in Montrose, Mrs. Maurine Bowen.
Graveside services were held March 30 in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Moab with military rites provided by the Moab American Legion Post #54 Honor Guard.
