Doris Gregory
Doris H. Gregory of Montrose Colorado passed away on Friday, May 24th, 2014 at the age of 96.
She was born in Jerome Idaho on April 5th 1941 to Nelly and Darwin D. Holland.
She married the late Carl E. Gregory on Aug. 17th, 1940.
She gave birth to their son Dorwin in 1942.
Doris received her PHD degree from Colombia University in 1951.
In 1951-1953 she served as Director of Elementary Education and Associate Professor at Pacific University at Forest Grove Oregon.
After moving to California Doris became the Co-Director of the Child Development Center at Long Beach City College.
In 1954 Doris began working as a Supervisor of Elementary Education in the Long Beach Unified School District.
In 1964 she became Director of Counseling and Psychological Services.
When they retired, Doris and her husband moved to Montrose Colorado and spent their summers in Ouray.
Doris will be remembered for her enormous contribution to the history of Western Colorado. In addition to many newspaper articles she wrote and published 11 books on the history of the Western Slope including that of Ouray, Ridgeway and the early mining industry.
Doris did volunteer work for many years for the Ouray Woman’s Club, the Ouray County Museum and worked closely with the Ouray Historical Society.
She is survived by her son, Dorwin Gregory.
