DAVID ELMER GOODHUE

February 24, 1936 – January 15, 2024

David Elmer Goodhue from Montrose, Colorado passed away January 15, 2024 at Montrose Regional Health after a period of declining health.  He was born on February 24, 1936 in Carlisle, Iowa to Marion G. Goodhue and Winifred B. (Owens) Goodhue.  He graduated from Carlisle High School and attended Iowa State College focusing on a career in agriculture.

David married Margaret L. Ford on January 12, 1957 in Carlisle, Iowa and had just celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in Hawaii.   David and Margaret have one son, Dennis D. (Sherry) Goodhue from Montrose, Colorado.  David has spent his entire life first working on the family farm in Iowa and then acquired his own farm.  In 1958 he moved with his family to Ridgway, Colorado where he and Margaret owned the Ridgway Mercantile.  There they had a busy grocery business and made many friends in the Ridgway/Ouray area.  In 1960 they acquired a farm south of Montrose where David had dairy cows and was back to his first love of farming.  In 1962 they moved to his current home closer to Montrose where David had more farming acreage and a cattle feedlot.  David remained on the farm up until his death.

David was a member of the Montrose United Methodist Church, Montrose Elk’s Lodge, and served on the Uncompahgre Valley Water Users Board for many years. He served several years on the Montrose Potato Growers Board and the Montrose County Fair Board.

David enjoyed visiting with many friends and family. In his younger years he spent many hours boating and water skiing on Sweitzer Lake.  They enjoyed snowmobiling and outings at their cabin at Little Cimarron with friends and family. Family dinners were always a happy time as he then had enough people to play his favorite card game of “Pitch”.  Joining friends for coffee and a morning of good conversation was a highlight for him as well.

David and Margaret were always fortunate to live close to their son Dennis (Sherry) to share many family activities with them. One of the bright spots of David’s life was the birth of his grandson John.  David and John spent many hours visiting, playing golf, getting ice cream cones, and other activities.

David is survived by his wife Margaret, son Dennis (Sherry), and grandson John (Ashley) of Denver.  David was the oldest of five siblings and is survived by Howard (Marilyn) Goodhue of Carlisle, Iowa, Fred Goodhue of Spokane, Washington, Mary Snyder of Montrose, Colorado, and Robert (Linda) Goodhue of Montrose, Colorado.  He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services for David will be held Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Montrose.  A viewing will be held Friday, January 19, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Crippin Funeral Home.  Interment at the Valley Lawn Cemetery will follow the service.   Memorial contributions can be sent to Sharing Ministries in Montrose, or the Margaret Goodhue Scholarship fund at Colorado Mesa University Foundation in Grand Junction.  Crippin Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
