Carol Jean Stephens
January 25, 1926 – June 29, 2018
Carol Jean Stephens age 92, was born January 25, 1926, in Montrose, Co, to George P and Nettibelle (Lewis) Broughton who were fruit growers on the Western Slope.
Carol graduated as Valedictorian from Olathe High School in 1944 and then attended University of Colorado, Boulder for a year on an academic scholarship. In December of 1946 Carol married Rhodes Stephens, A WWII decorated Air Force Veteran. Rhodes and Carol lived in Montrose County where they farmed and raised cows on California Mesa. They ran the cows on the Uncompaghre Plateau. They also owned The Dude Corral Motel as well as Westerner Sporting Good Store in Montrose after retiring from farming and ranching. Carol & Rhodes celebrated over 50 years of marriage before his passing in 1994.
Carol was proud of and dearly loved her husband, her boys and their wife’s. She loved to go to Alaska and Denver to visit her family. Her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandson were very special and important and loved by Carol.
The foundation for Carol’s life was Jesus Christ, and her prayers for her family and friends were that they have a personal relationship with Jesus. She recently said she put her faith in Jesus, and only Jesus, and knew she had a home in heaven, because of her faith in Jesus finished work on the cross.
Carol and Rhodes had two boys David Stephens from Wasilla, Alaska, and Dan Stephens from Westminster, Colorado. David has 4 girls from Alaska Shanna, Shelley, Sharlene, and Sharla. Her son Dan has two children Emily and Zach. Carol also had 16 great grandchildren as well as one great-great grandson. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, as well as 4 brothers Don, Bob, Orris, and Floyd Broughton, and a sister Margaret Smith.
A visitation will be from 9:45 to 10:30 and a funeral service to Celebrate the Life of Carol will be held Thursday, July 12, 2018 at 10:30 am at the Montrose Christian Church with Don & Gary Stephens officiating. A reception will follow the funeral and interment to follow at 2:00, where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved Rhodes at Grand View Cemetery west of Montrose.
