Calvin Riley Halterman
April 1, 1925-April 15, 2019
Calvin Riley Halterman, age 94, went to be with his Lord on April 15, 2019, while in his home with loved ones around him.
He was born on April 1, 1925 to Elijah and Myrtle (Long) Halterman in Twin Falls, Idaho. The family moved to Hayden, Idaho and Calvin resided there until he entered the Navy on July 20, 1942.
He was an Electrician’s Mate Third Class and was stationed in Cairns, Australia. After Australia he was assigned to the Landing Ship, Tank 477, which was on Iwo Jima during the Allied island campaign. One of the highlights of his service was that he was on Iwo Jima when the flag was raised on Mount Suribachi. He also served on the islands of Guam and Saipan. He received an Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal with 1-Star and the World War II Victory Medal.
After leaving the service, he married Bernita Murdach in 1946, and they had three children. He began working as a saw fitter at Potlach Forest in Lewiston, Idaho, until their divorce in 1956.
Calvin then met the love of his life Carol Mattoon Harris and married her in December of 1962. He was a father to her five children. Calvin continued working as a saw fitter until he became a head saw filer. Calvin and Carol lived in various places until they moved to Montrose, Colorado, in 1982. He worked at the Blue Mesa Saw Mill where he was a head saw filer, until his retirement.
His two beloved hobbies were hunting and fishing. He also loved his family, even those that weren’t blood related, and his friends. He would always do whatever he could to help anyone out. His smile was contagious, and he loved being a prankster. Calvin’s major passion was the love he had for his Lord and Savior and he is now at rest in his final home.
