Betty Sue Castle (Passmore)

May 31, 1934 — February 7, 2018

Betty Sue Castle (nee Passmore) departed this life on February 7, 2018 in Hotchkiss, Colorado, surrounded by loved ones. She was 83 years old. She was born in a cabin in Black Mountain, North Carolina on May 31, 1934 to Horace Greeley and Ora Revis Passmore. Betty had seven siblings. When she was eight years old, she moved with her family to Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. When she was 18, she met Paul Merton Castle, a Navy seaman, and he proposed three days later. They were married four days later on August 23, 1952 and spent the next 59 ½ years in love. Paul and Betty had one daughter and three sons.
During their marriage, Paul and Betty lived in many places in the United States including Alaska and California. Upon Paul’s retirement, they moved back to Colorado to be closer to family. Betty worked at the Columbine Gift Shop in Ouray, Colorado for 20 years. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and was kind to all who knew her. She was a sassy Southern Belle who exuded class and sophistication. She never hesitated to speak her mind. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and needlework, and she fed anyone who walked through her door.
Betty’s greatest passion in life was her family. She was preceded in death by both of her parents, five of her siblings, and her beloved husband Paul. She is survived by two siblings, Elaine Turner and Faye Bohannon of North Carolina, and her four children, Susan Elaine Castle, Paul Michael Castle, David Wade (Carol) Castle, and Don Emory (Tami) Castle. She doted on her nineteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. Betty’s wisdom and advice are cherished by all who were fortunate enough to receive it. Her family loves her deeply, and she will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held privately and at the convenience of the family.
