Benny Ray Underwood, deceased Saturday, Nov.21,2015 approx.11:00 a.m. at his home in Montrose. Ben was a custom home builder with Monarch Construction in Montrose since 1972 and built many homes in Montrose and on Western Slope.  He was born July 3, 1940 in Jet, Oklahoma to Melvin Herman Underwood and Bessie Viola Lewis. His early childhood years were spent in New Mexico and graduated High School from Washington High School in Fremont,  California in 1959.

 

He married his high school sweetheart, Lynn McCafferty, in 1962 in Reno, NV. They were married 53 years on Nov. 17, 2015.  Ben lived in many states throughout his life. He was a born again Christian and deeply loved the Lord but was not a member of any church. Ben was an extremely talented and gifted man in many ways.  His special interest included building and playing guitars and singing. He was a familiar face to see on Main Street in Motion for several years as well as in many nursing homes and worship services. He also loved to build and shoot guns, leather tooling, wood working, furniture making, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family. If you knew Ben personally, you knew he was a practical joker and loved to prank everyone. He was a stranger to no one and everyone was welcome in his family and home.

 

Ben is survived by his wife, Lynn, daughters, Kelly MacTiernan and husband Scott of Pagosa Springs and Stacy Underwood Kelley of Montrose, and son, Ben Underwood and wife, Lisa of Tyler, Texas,  brothers, Jerry Underwood of Wyoming, Joe Underwood of Montrose  and sisters, Maxine Fotheringham of Trinity, TX.  and Sue English of Montrose.  He has 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren in Texas, Mo and Pagosa Springs, CO. He has a deceased brother, Don Underwood.

 

Memorial Contributions may be made at Bank of Colorado, Montrose for the Ben Underwood Memorial Fund.  A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at 11:00 am at Crippin Funeral Home chapel.  The service will conclude at the chapel.  Arrangements are under the care of  Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory, Montrose, Co.
