Thelma Harriett Johnson

November 10, 1918 — January 12, 2015

Thelma Harriett Johnson, age 96, a native of the Western slope of Colorado, went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 12, 2015.

Thelma H. Johnson and her twin brother, the late Harold Goding, were born to Fred and Harriett Goding on November 10, 1918 in Paonia, Colorado.  She spent her girlhood on Ragged Mountain where she attended school.  After school, in her early years, she was a telephone operator for the Delta Co-op for 3 ½ years.

On October 30, 1941 she married Herman Johnson, a mail carrier and moved to Montrose, where they made their home until their time of death. Herman passed away in 1969.  Following the death of her husband, she worked for Gibsons Discount Store for 15 years before retiring.  In her early years after school she was a telephone operator for the Delta Co-op for 3 ½ years.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Jerry Kean of Centennial, Colorado; a niece Sheila Tonc; two nephews Harold and Douglas Goding.

Thelma’s main interests were her family and volunteer work at which she continued to do as long as she was able;  volunteering at the Senior Center, and at the Montrose Historical Museum, which she was a life time member of. She loved gardening and spent many hours and days tending to her roses and flowers.  Thelma had achieved the “Yard of the Week” numerous times.

A Memorial Service in celebration of Thelma’s life will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.  The Service will conclude at the Chapel.  A private family inurnment will take place at Valley Lawn Cemetery, Montrose, Co.  Arrangements are under the direction of Crippin funeral Home & Crematory, Montrose, Co.
