Terrance K. Carr

Terrance Kent Carr passed away Jan. 2, 2013 at Montrose Memorial Hospital after a short illness.  Born in Telluride on July 30, 1934 to Ralph and Marguerite Carr, He came to Montrose in 1938 from Norwood .  Terry was a real native of Western Colorado as all four of his grandparents were here before 1900.

Terry attended local schools graduating from Montrose County School in 1952.  His talent in music and band won him many awards.  In 1949 he played with the MCHS Band for the dedication of Montrose Memorial Hospital.  He was also active in Boy Scouts, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout.  He continued his education attending Denver University and Western State College majoring in music and business.

Living most of his life in Montrose, he was involved in Rotary, the Masonic Lodge, Montrose county Planning Commission, the Episcopal and Methodist churches.  He played the organ for Sunday services and special occasions for many years at the Montrose Christian Church, where he was a member.

His Dad and Grand-Dad all were part of the lumber industry in Western Colorado having sawmills near Lone Cone in Norwood, near Chimney Rock and Courthouse and on the Squirrell Ranch near Blue Mesa.  In 1955 Terry, his brother Charles and his dad Ralph started Carr Lumber and Milling just north of Montrose.  A successful milling operation they made finished lumber for construction throughout Colorado and surrounding states.  After selling the mill in 1980, Terry began Modern Wood Products and specialized in custom wood moulding by grinding his own knives for matching patterns like those found in old Victorian homes in the area.  His work can be found from the Western Slope of Colorado to the Hoover Dam.  He retired in 2001 and sold his business.

Married on Mar. 1, 1958 to Nancy Lee Gardels, he is survived by his wife Nancy; daughters: Ronda Carr, Ronlyn Carr Lanning, Kathryn Hagel; son Ryan Scott Carr, Nancy’s brother David Palmer, whom they raised, brother Charles Carr, and sister Dianne Mahaffey; grandchildren: Sabrina Youngblood, Michael Carr, Hannah Henegar, Sara Hagel, Drew, Kirk and Evan Palmer; and four great grandchildren, Max and Leo Carr, Damien Youngblood and Marlee Henegar; nephews: Ron Carr, John Mahaffey and niece Caryl Makowski.

A memorial service will be held at Montrose Christian church at 11:00 AM, Monday, Jan. 7, 2013.  Memorial gifts may be given to Montrose Christian church or Rite-Care Foundation for children’s speech therapy, c/o Bill Kledas, Box 193, Montrose, Co.  81402.  Arrangements are under the care of Crippin funeral Home & Crematory, Montrose, Co.
