Richard A. 'Pug' Wormell

May 16, 1938 — August 28, 2016

Richard A. Wormell, affectionately known by friends and family as “Pug,” age 78, went to be with his Lord on Sunday Aug. 28, 2016, surrounded by his family in his home in Montrose. Richard’s faith in Christ was an anchor during his life, recent illness, and in his passing. He was born in Pueblo, Colo., on May 16th, 1938 to Milo and Mildred Wormell and was the younger brother to William Wormell. He was a track and field award winning medalist in relay and broad jump, and played the trumpet in the Montrose High School Band, before graduating in 1956.

He was married to Kay Ann Sparr June 21, 1959 in First United Methodist Church of Montrose and soon after, enlisted in the Army National Guard, in which he served six years as a radio mechanic. Richard’s working career was as varied as it was interesting, ranging from long haul line driver to business owner to rancher. Having a mind for engineering and mechanics, he was known to be able to build or fix just about anything.

His friends and neighbors knew him to be generous and loyal, able to help in a pinch. Richard’s family knew him to be hard working, devoted, and a gifted story teller. Many hold favorite memories of him clearing snowy driveways for others, shooting the elk no one else could get, and driving all day and all night just to make his destination in record time. His children fondly remember childhood fishing trips, him yodeling in the high country and demonstrating how to shoot straight. He was a true man of the mountains who climbed 14’rs with this kids into his 70s.

His adventurous life will forever be cherished in the lives of his children, Troy Wormell of Tulsa, Okla., Lee Ann Boyer of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Michelle Hollomon of Seattle, Wash. Richard Wormell was survived by his wife, children, 13 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
