Michael “Mikie” Alan Kennedy, long-time resident of the Montrose area, died Sunday, May 7th, 2017 at Montrose Memorial Hospital due to heart failure caused by high blood pressure.
Mikie was born on Nov. 3rd, 1957, In Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was the second of four children.
He graduated high school from Kettlemoraine High School, in Wales, WI, with the Class of 1976.
He entered the Army in June 1976 and always enjoyed telling tales of his service in Panama. He discharged the Army in June of 1980.
When he discharged the military he moved to Denver and married his first wife, Lisa.
At that time he was employed by Willliams concrete in Denver and had many tales of building the runways at DIA. When he and Lisa separated, Mike moved to the Western Slope. He tried his hand at logging, then went to work at Collins Farms.
In 1988, he moved to Clifton with Shawna Childers, a Montrose native to whom he was eventually married, and went to work for Golden Eagle Security. After a year they returned to Montrose and Mike went to work at Louisiana Pacific where he remained employed until the plant closed in 2001. He then went to work at Outwest Drywall and remained there until he retired in 2008
Mike and Shawna divorced in 1996 and shortly after that Mikie met Sherlea Points and fell in love again. Mike and Sherlea were married and lived in Olathe until her death on August 6, 2007. Mike and Sherlea adopted Mike’s nephew Forrest Kennedy.
Mike and Forrest continued living alone in Olathe until 2011. At that time Shawna Childers returned to Mike’s home and she and Mike lived together for the good of Forrest.
He is preceded in death by his father, Edward Kennedy, his mother Rosemary Grudinsky, his big brother Daniel Kennedy, only sister Karin Conrad and her Grandson Marcel Luis Torres, and, of course, the love of his life, Sherlea.
He is survived by his common-law wife, Shawna Childers, his nephew and adopted son, Forrest Alexander Kennedy, both of Olathe; his brother, Robert Kennedy and Robert’s wife Shirley of Grand Clifton; brother-out-law and best friend, Tomas Torres of Escalante Canyon; other best friend Stephen Bartholomew, of Montrose; his nieces Kristin Goode, of Utah, Rosemary Torres, of New Mexico, and Tabitha Torres of Olathe.
Mike also had four stepchildren, Kymball Hight of Grand Junction, Krista Finley of Montrose, and Clay and Daniel Points, previously of Olathe.
Mikie was the Easter Bunny and will be sore missed by all the children of the family.
Mikie’s family would like to take this opportunity to point out, if Mike had controlled his blood pressure, he could have survived his surgery. In honor of Mikie, please monitor and maintain your health. Arrangements are under the care of Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory, in Montrose.
