HAROLD A. SHIER

DECEMBER 6, 1922 – JANUARY 16, 2015

Harold A. Shier of Montrose, CO went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 16, 2015, culminating his 2 years of declining health.  He passed away at the Hope West Hospice Care Center in Grand Junction, CO.

Harold was born, December 6, 1922, in Los Angeles, CA to Edward and Rosabelle Shier, the third of 5 boys.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and three of his brothers.  He is survived by an older brother, Lloyd E. Shier (Florence) of California; Rhoda Shier, his wife of 72 years, Montrose; and his four children, Greg and Debbie Shier of LaVerne, CA, Gary and Stacia Shier of Montrose, CO, Steve and Gayle Meredith of Lake City, CO, and Ted and Genean Vinatieri of Fredericksburg, VA.  He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great- grandchild.

Following marriage to Rhoda (Yelland) of Pasadena, CA in 1942, Harold served as an airplane mechanic in WW II with the Army Air Force from January 1943 until discharge in April of 1945.  After military service, Harold worked with his father, a Southern California building and painting contractor.  He went on to spend 47 years in the painting industry, completing his career as an independent   contractor.

Harold was an avid sportsman, with deep-sea fishing being his sporting passion.  He passed along his love for the outdoors to his children, introducing them to hiking, fishing, and biking, as well as major team sports.  Harold is remembered for establishing and maintaining his beautiful yards, with particular care given to his treasured roses.  He was a compassionate and generous man, often coming to the aid of someone in need, whether a family member, friend, or a stranger he encountered.  But most important to Harold was sharing life with his wife Rhoda, along with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and actively serving in his church, Victory Baptist (Montrose) for the past 20 years.

Graveside interment will take place Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. at Grandview Cemetery.  It will be followed at 11:00 A.M. by a memorial service at Victory Baptist Church.   In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Hope West Hospice Care Center, 3090 N. 12th Street, Grand Junction, CO, 81506.  Arrangements are under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory, Montrose, Colorado.
