Dumont (Monty) Rutherford Sr. passed away July 17, 2015 at the age of 99 at his home in Montrose, surrounded by family and friends.  Born November 4, 1915 in McKinney, Texas to Glenn Rutherford and Ora Belle Stephens Rutherford. He served in the C C C at Ohio City and Pitkin area in construction and fire fighting.  He enlisted in the Navy and served at Pearl Harbor June 1943 to March 1945, March 1945 to August 1945 Iwo Jima.  He was a plumber in the Navy’s construction battalion (CB’s).  Upon his honorable discharge, Monty obtained his master plumber’s license and started his own plumbing business.  He was a member of Plumber’s and Pipefitter’s Local 575 in Lafayette, Co.

On October 23rd 1948, Monty married the love of his life, Lottie Pryor in New Kensington, Pa.  Monty was known for his ability to tell stories, sharp mind, toughness with the ability to be gentle, stellar father, mentor, teacher and coach.  He loved the outdoors and hunting and fishing. He was a member of NRA, Knights of Columbus and St Mary’s Catholic Church.

Monty is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lottie; sister in law Helen Skelton of Berthoud, Co; sons, Monty Jr.(Debbie) of Mack, Co; James (Peggy) of Montrose, Co; Robert of Berthoud, Co; daughter Helen (Porky) of Montrose, Co; nine grandchildren and 13 great- grandchildren numerous nieces and nephews.  Monty was preceded in death by his parents; brother Weldon Rutherford; his sisters, Vivalee Woodson, Louise Tuton Longley.

The family would like to thank HopeWest Hospice for their care, kindness and support.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to National Rifle Association, or HopeWest Hospice or St Mary’s Catholic Church in Monty’s name.  A vigil and rosary will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at 7:00pm at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.  A Funeral Mass of the faithfully departed will be celebrated at St Mary’s Catholic Church on Wednesday July 22, at 2:00 pm, followed by internment at Grand View Cemetery, west of Montrose.  Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory, Montrose, Co. is assisting the family.
