Dennis Devor, age 67, died peacefully on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Valley Manor Care Center following a lengthy illness.

Dennis was born in 1950 at Montrose Memorial Hospital, Montrose, CO to George Wendell Devor and Marguerite Gertrude (McWilliams) Devor. After graduating from Montrose High School in 1968, Dennis became a CU Buff, earning a Bachelors Degree in Business in 1972, and a Masters in Public Administration in 1976. For his Masters internship, he returned to Montrose and was a part of the historical events that led to the Montrose “Mouse” symbol, the Dallas Creek Project and Ridgway Dam approval. After graduating from Pepperdine Law School, Malibu, CA, he worked for Connors Drilling in Denver, CO. In 1980, Dennis returned to Montrose, and worked at the United Bank of Montrose/Norwest, eventually opening his own law practice in 1991. For several semesters in the 2000s, Dennis taught business classes at the Montrose campus of Colorado Mesa University. Dennis married Kathy (Lowther) Devor in 1979 in a mountain meadow above Ridgway, CO. They raised two wonderful children in Montrose, Matt and Laura.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Kathy (Lowther) Devor, of Montrose, CO; his son, Matt Devor (Kali) of Montrose, CO; his daughter, Laura Devor, of Denver, CO; his brother, Phil Devor (Margaret) of Markham, Ontario, Canada; his sister, Joy Duffy (John) of Sacramento, CA; his niece, Teresa (Devor) Hall of Fredericton, New Brunswick; and his nephews Truman Devor, of Toronto, Ontario, Tom LeFevre, of Sacramento, CA, and Douglas and Mark Olinger, of Silver Spring, Maryland. His parents, George and Marguerite Devor, preceded him in death.

Dennis thrived on making Montrose, Colorado a better place to live now and for future generations. His vision helped create the Montrose Pavilion, the Academic Booster Club and the Montrose Education Foundation. His tireless community involvement included Rotary, the Montrose Chamber of Commerce, the Red Coats, the Salvation Army, the United Methodist Church, and the Grand Mesa Christian Association Methodist Camp. During his 24 years of practicing law, he was able to fulfill his continual desire to help people.

Dennis loved to travel around the world. However, his favorite places were the southwest Colorado mountains and the Utah canyon country where he enjoyed hiking, fishing, hunting, rafting, exploring and being with family.

The family thanks his home caregivers, HopeWest Hospice, and the staff at Valley Manor Care Center for their loving support during Dennis’s final months. A Memorial Service and reception will be held Saturday, September 16th, 2017 at 1:00 pm at the Montrose United Methodist Church, 19 South Park Ave, Montrose, CO.
