Bernabe Romero

August 15, 1941 — March 23, 2017

Bernabe Herman Romero, age 75, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2017 in the comforts of his home, with his wife at his side, in Montrose, Colorado.

Bernie was born in Bernalillo, New Mexico on August 15, 1941 to Barney and Irene (Garcia) Romero. He was the sixth of eight children.

He spent his childhood in Gleenwood Springs, CO where his father worked as a telegrapher for D&RG Rail Road. He enjoyed many outdoor activities with his friends and siblings.

Bernie joined the United States Army in 1959, serving in many posts around the world, including France, Germany, and two tours in Vietnam, Korea, and several other states in the U.S. He received many medals and awards including a Bronze Star, a Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Star, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with palm, and one Bronze Service Star, and Meritorious Silver Service with first and second Oak Leaf Clusters. Bernie also received a Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (NCO Ribbon) even though he never attended the schooling for it. When he asked why he was receiving it, he was told it was because “they couldn’t teach him anything new.”

He married Margie Vigil in 1961, and had two daughters, Lori and Christina. They later divorced, and he married Dorothy Marie Schulze in 1982 and helped raise her two young sons Christopher and Alan. He retired from the Army later that year, and went to work for Litton Saudi Arabia LTD.

In 1983 he transferred to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and joined by his family in 1984. They had many friends among the ex-pat’s and enjoyed vacations around the world, returning in 1988. In 1990 he worked for TRW (Private and Government Contracting) until he retired in 2000.

In 2002 Bernie and Marie moved to Montrose, so Marie could work as a respiratory therapist and sleep technician at Montrose Memorial Hospital, until her retirement in 2012.

In 2016 Bernie was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer. He began having symptoms in early December, following a bad cold; by February 2017 his cancer caught up to him.

Bernie is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister, three nephews, and two nieces. He is survived by his wife Marie Romero of Montrose; his sister Rosie Chavez of Utah; Theresa Martinez of New Mexico; his daughters Lori (Gary) Gilgen of Utah; Christina (Tony) Herrera of Utah; two step-sons Christopher (Dianne Ankney) Clemens of Arizona; Alan (Angela) Clemens of Arizona; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two uncles; one aunt; and many nieces and nephews.
